Last year was a record breaking year for safety in the rail industry. FRA data for 2025 shows that freight rail safety continued to improve. Overall train accidents are down 14% year-over-year. Derailments, equipment caused accidents, and track caused accidents each fell to their lowest levels in the industry’s history. Incidents tied to human factors dropped nearly 20%.
